The Simple Push Up

There are many books and articles on golf fitness. Most are giving you a routine to follow that helps build and conditions your golf muscles to increase flexibility and strength. This of course will help you hit the ball longer. I am sure that most of the routines if followed consistently will help your strength and flexibility, as you grow older.

However I believe that most golfers are like myself. We would rather find a short cut and not have to exercise a hour or two daily and then hit balls or go play a round of golf. I don't know about you but at my age I would be too tired to do both on the same day.

Arm speed produces almost 85% toward club head speed. Body motion produces approximately 14% toward club head speed. Body mass (weight) contributes less than 1% toward club head speed. It is a myth that the big muscles that move the arms mainly produce club head speed. This is per scientific (physics) studies.

I started doing two exercises that I believe have helped keep me strong and flexible. Both take only minutes a day to complete. The two exercises are pushups and the body twists . First let me explain pushups and then I will explain the body twists exercises later in another article

When I started the pushup I could only do about five. Today I do 35 a day, each and every day. You should try to increase your total to a minimum of 20 daily or more if you are able to do so. The number you do will depend a lot on your weight and strength when you start. Start slowly and build to your maximum.

The reason and purpose of push-ups is to increase the strength of your tricep muscles, pectorals, and deltoids that help when swinging the club head down from the top of your back swing. The pushups will also increase strength in your biceps and other arm and shoulder muscles that will also help with increased distance. Pushups stimulate all the muscles that create almost 85% of club head speed.
