(DEC 08)
Hi Golf Girl,
I think I'm ready to get out on the golf course! I got a good set of clubs, I've taken a series of lessons and I've worked consistently at the range over that past couple of months.
Now I've got an invite to play at an AWESOME country club with an AWESOME guy I've been interested in (OK obsessed with) for a while. He's a golf nut and I know this is going to be the perfect way for me to make a real connection with him. The thing is, he thinks I'm an experienced golfer (probably because I told him I was to get him to ask me to play with him! ) and I don't want him to know I've never actually played before. So here's what I need to know: How do I look the part?
I've been checking out the golf sites on the Internet and found a confusing array of outfits ...and tons of different opinions... on what's appropriate and what's not. My personal style is definitely flirty, feminine and...fitted (OK, blatantly sexy) and I just wouldn't feel like myself in the boxy, bland styles I see on some of the sites, but I realize this is a very conservative club, so I'm not sure the tiny skirts I see on the pros (and love, BTW) are quite right either. I just want to make a good impression on this REALLY GREAT guy and maybe have some fun on the golf course while I'm at it. What should I wear?
Thanks, Aspiring Golf Girlfriend
Dear Aspiring,
The first thing you need to know is this: unless you're extraordinarily gifted, he's going to know from the first hole that you're not an experienced golfer. No matter how well you're doing at the range, your first time out on a golf course will almost inevitably be a series of whiffs and miss hits and lost balls and five putts. So I urge you to come clean before you step up the to first tee. Let him know that you "slightly over exaggerated" your level of golf experience, that you haven't "actually played on a course" but that you've taken lessons, learned the etiquette and worked hard at the range and you really, really love the game. If he's a decent guy ...and if he's at all into you... he'll get it and he'll be be OK with it.
But... DO Know you etiquette, and DO follow it! Pick up your ball (frequently) to keep up with him, and limit yourself to three putts. Endless mishitting, long searches for balls and multiple missed putts are the things that good golfers find most annoying when playing with beginners. Avoid them if you don't want to annoy him.
As for the clothes. That's the easy part. You like this guy so you don't want to bump up against the dress code at his club. And if it's a conservative club it probably has a dress code, but that's not a big deal and it certainly doesn't mean you can't look sexy. Since collars are often a requirement, I suggest you go with a polo shirt. Fortunately these days polo shirts have been reworked, slimmed down and sexed up by designers like Ralph Lauren & Tommy Hillfinger and edgy golf apparel makers like Tatoo Golf & Three Tees. And if you're on a budget make a bee line for Target. They always have a selection of reasonably price polo's, and they take their cues from the fashion runways so you'll find lean body conscious shirts in flirty colors. As for the bottom half, no need to go bulky there either. Wear you pants, shorts or skirt as tight as you like, just make sure they don't restrict your movement, after all you sort of need to be able to walk and sit down. To be safe keep the length at mid-thigh and definitely ...no denim. Most clubs are quite strict about that one. As for accessories; cute golf shoes are easy to find these days, as are cute caps and gloves. Finish your outfit up with those. And of course, don't forget to wear some flirty jewelry and sexy sunnies. This way you won't have any issues with the dress code AND you'll look like your awesome, sexy self. You may not play like an experienced golfer...yet...but as I know from experience, when the rest is done right...guys don't generally have a problem with that. Good Luck.
And be sure to check out Pat's Website!... Golf Girls Diary! You'll love it! But come back damn it!!!
